How does the Charge Card work day-to-day?

Written by Jess Hawkins

How does an employee decide how much to sacrifice?

The loveelectric Charge app includes a built-in calculator that helps employees work out the right monthly sacrifice amount. It takes into account their expected annual personal mileage and their projected split between home and public charging. loveelectric provides an estimate, but employees can adjust this if their circumstances differ.

What happens if an employee doesn't use their full balance?

Unused funds don't disappear — they roll over month to month within the contract term. If there's a remaining balance at the end of the contract, or if the contract ends early, it is refunded to the employer, who then reimburses the employee through payroll via gross salary (as required by HMRC).

Note: mid-term cash reimbursements are not possible. Refunds can only be processed at the end of the contract term or upon early termination.

Can an employee change their sacrifice amount or cancel early?

In line with HMRC rules, salary sacrifice schemes must be set for a fixed 12-month term. Employees cannot ordinarily change their deduction amount or cancel mid-term.

However, HMRC does permit early changes or cancellations in the event of a recognised life event (such as a change in working hours, family circumstances, or pay). In these cases, employees can submit a variation request, and the employer can amend or end the arrangement from that point.

How does home charging work?

Employees enter their home energy tariff details in the Charge Card app and log their home charging sessions as they go. loveelectric calculates the cost of those sessions and makes the equivalent amount available to "redeem" from their card balance. Employees can then put that amount towards their home energy bill by using their Charge Card details when making a payment to their energy provider — the same way they'd use any other card online.

Can the card be used with charging subscriptions?

Yes. The Charge Card can be used to pay for EV charging subscriptions, which can reduce the cost per kWh and make charging even more affordable.

Does the card support business mileage expense reimbursement?

Not currently. Business mileage reimbursement is not a supported feature at this stage. If this is something your organisation would find valuable, please flag it to the loveelectric team — it's on the roadmap for future development.
